Saanich, BC – Dogs and their owners have excellent access to green space in the District of Saanich with more than 170 parks and only four with seasonal restrictions.
As the weather warms up and people spend more time outdoors, Saanich reminds dog owners that from May 1 to August 31, dogs are not permitted in:
- Cadboro-Gyro Park or the Cadboro Bay public beach area in front of the park and towards Oak Bay after 9 a.m.
- Cordova Bay Beach (between Cordova Bay Park and Walema Ave) after 9 a.m.
- Mount Douglas Park Beach and adjacent picnic/parking area
- Whitehead Park
From March 1 to October 31 dogs are not permitted in fenced baseball fields.
There are some areas of Saanich where dogs must be on a leash all year round:
- on school grounds
- within 10 metres of playground equipment
- in the Royal Oak Burial Park
- on the Lochside Trail within the Blenkinsop Lake area
- in Cedar Hill Park, including all trails
- along the perimeter trail in Rithet’s Bog
Dogs are prohibited in Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary and Quick’s Bottom all year long because they are sensitive nature sanctuaries. Dogs are also not permitted on artificial turf fields or within 50 metres of King’s Pond in Cedar Hill Park except leashed on the chip trail.
Saanich Animal Control officers will be out monitoring the restricted dog areas over the course of the summer. Please clean up after your dogs, obey leash regulations and be mindful of the environment at all times.
