Building for a One Planet Region
When we look at Victoria and Saanich’s ecological footprint, buildings are the third largest component (after food and transportation). So how do we build housing and do urban and community development so as to both reduce our ecological and carbon footprint (by about 70%, and soon) and ensure that everyone in the region has a decent life – which obviously includes adequate and affordable housing.
Speakers
- Kaeley Wiseman – Principal Owner, Wiser Projects. Wiser Projects embraces development and community planning projects of all sizes to realize their goals in the public, private, Indigenous and non-profit sectors. For over a decade, Ms. Wiseman has supported clients in environmental, social, and financial planning and approvals for their Indigenous and non-Indigenous development projects. She was previously Manager of Planning and Development for M’akola Development Services and is a professor in the Master of Community Planning program at Vancouver Island University
- Christine Lintott – Principal, Christine Lintott Architects Inc., an innovative building design practice providing architectural services to institutional, non-profit, and private sector clients across Canada and internationally. She is a Registered Architect and Biomimicry Professional, with an expertise in whole system design solutions, BIM implementation, and ecological integration. Christine is one of a handful of practitioners on the planet today combining built environment design with Biomimicry, with its potential for informing regenerative design, and also works in the areas of ‘gentle density’ and ‘the missing middle’ , crucial approaches to One Planet community design.
- Julian West – Founder of Urban Thrive. Julian is a small-scale developer, social entrepreneur and founder of Urban Thrive, which aims to make Victoria a model of sustainable urban development. They build modest density housing (townhomes and low-rise apartments) and mixed-use projects (shops and residential) in established single-family neighbourhoods. in a way that respects the existing character and scale, so residents see their neighbourhood growing and evolving – not being replaced. Urban Thrive exists to be a catalyst for change, accelerating our shift toward becoming a more compact, sustainable, human-scale city.
