UVic: two new capital projects planned on campus

The Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability advises that they are  currently involved in planning for two new capital projects on campus. They following information is provided as part of UVic’s commitment, under the Engagement Framework report, for engaging community stakeholders on campus land use planning and development projects:

  1. One project is renovations to the Student Union Building  and a small addition which provides for part of the outdoor patio space of the campus pub, Felicita’s to be added to the south side of the building.
  2. The second is a new campus bike centre. It will provide cyclists with secure and sheltered  parking space for over 150 bikes, lockers and other amenities in part of the current parkade at the west side of the lower level of the University Centre building.

Development variance permit applications have been made to the District of Saanich for both projects. Twenty eight out of 70 vehicle parking spaces in the parkade are to be displaced with the construction of the campus bike centre. The Student Union Building addition, under the Saanich Zoning Bylaw requires that 1 additional parking space be provided.

More information on these projects and the engagement approach utilized under the framework, along with the rationale provided for the variance applications is available here:
