Saanich considers creating a Farmland Trust, Monday Feb 24th

Saanich Councillor Dean Murdock, writes:

On Monday night, 24 Feb, Council will consider a recommendation from the Environment & Natural Areas Committee to develop a Farmland Trust. The recommendation asks staff to explore possible partnerships with the CRD or neighbouring municipalities and options for the development of a Trust. Staff would report back to Council with options to proceed.

What is a Farmland Trust? Farmland Trusts or Banks are often an arms-length or third party society (like the Saanich Legacy Foundation) that holds acquired or bequested properties for agricultural use. Funds to acquire property can come from a variety of sources, such as grants, donations, development fees or an agricultural levy. Various examples exist around the world, including a program in Langford that is funded by development fees. You can find more information about the concept right here.
