The CBRA received the following from Saanich to share with our neighbours.
As summer quickly gives way to fall and busy commuting season arrives, we wanted to take a moment to reach out with a short safety reminder for your members.
You may or may not have seen that District of Saanich refuse trucks have integrated automated cart tipping arms. These tipper arms, when extended, reach nine feet across bike lanes and other areas to grab carts.
To ensure we’re doing everything possible to keep all road users safe around our trucks, we’ve integrated Airbars, highly visible and inflatable safety devices, to draw commuter attention to extended tipper arms grabbing carts.
For everyone’s safety, it is vital that all road users slow down and take caution, especially in low light, when approaching our refuse trucks. Solid Waste Services crews begin collection at 7 a.m., which means soon they will be working in the dark during the start of their shifts.
Commuting tips when approaching refuse trucks
To help everyone stay safe, we ask that road users, when approaching refuse trucks take a few simple steps:
- Yield to Solid Waste Services crew members, they’ll only be a second, we promise!
- Anticipate a slow-moving work zone and slow down.
- Keep your eyes peeled for the extending tipper arm across your path.

Thank you so much!
