Saanich Open House on Noxious Weeds Bylaw Initiative, Nov. 6

From District of Saanich:

We Need Your Input
The Noxious Weeds Bylaw was first adopted by Saanich Council in 1906, to protect agriculture. Now more than 100 years later the Noxious Weeds Bylaw receives very few complaints about agricultural weeds, but is instead used mainly to control tall grasses and lacks clarity regarding invasive species, which are an increasing concern. An updated bylaw is needed that can be used effectively in combination with educational outreach for Saanich residents to address the problems of today.
What are the Objectives?

  1. To broaden the bylaw to consider current issues such as: new and established invasive species, current agricultural weeds, Naturescape gardening, and neglected properties
  2. To align the bylaw with the goal, strategies and actions of the Invasive Species Management Strategy
  3. To update and align the bylaw with provincial legislation
  4. To increase the use of proper techniques for removal and disposal
  5. To address enforcement, compliance and administrative issues
